November is the turn of the Namibian year. The dry season ends, the heat peaks, and the first rains arrive — usually late in the month, sometimes not at all. Interior days run roughly 30°C to 36°C, nights sit at a mild 17°C to 21°C, and rainfall averages 20–40 mm in the centre.
It is the hardest month on the calendar to advise on, because it can behave like October or like January depending on when the rain breaks. What it reliably offers is the last of the concentrated game viewing at genuinely lower prices, with very few other visitors.
Weather in Namibia in November
Hot, dry at the start, building toward storms by the end. The distinguishing feature of November is not the temperature but the uncertainty — the rains may break on the 5th or the 28th, and the whole character of the month follows that date.
Everything depends on when the rain breaks. Before it, November is October: bare ground, animals crowded onto permanent water, superb game viewing. After it, November is January: green shoots, dispersing game, dramatic skies. Both are good. They are not the same holiday, and nobody can tell you in advance which one you will get.
Wildlife and Safari in Namibia in November
The last of the great dry-season viewing, and the first signs of the green season, often in the same fortnight.
- Waterholes still work — until they do not. Early November is close to October. Once useful rain falls, surface water reappears and game begins to spread within days.
- Birding recovers fast. Summer migrants arrive through November. By the end of the month the birding is transformed from October’s low point.
- Calving begins. Springbok and other plains game start dropping young with the first rains, which draws predators.
- Predators are still visible. Cover is thin until the grass responds, so early November remains good for lion and cheetah.
- Elephant congregate. Damaraland’s desert-adapted herds remain on the dry riverbeds until the rivers run.

Best Regions to Visit in November
Etosha and the North
Hot — 34 to 38°C — and the best place to be if you come for wildlife. Staying inside the park matters more in November than in any other month, because the drive in from an outside lodge burns the only cool hour of the day. The floodlit camp waterholes after dark are the month’s highlight.
The Namib Desert and Sossusvlei
A first-light destination and nothing else. Be at the Sesriem gate as it opens, climb before eight, and be off the dunes by ten. Late November brings the possibility of storm cloud behind red dune, which is the most striking light the Namib produces all year.
Damaraland and the Erongo
Walking country that only works early. Twyfelfontein’s engravings and the Brandberg are unshaded, so they are dawn activities in November. Desert-adapted elephant remain predictable on the ephemeral rivers until the first floods come down.
Swakopmund and the Coast
Twenty to twenty-four degrees while the interior sits in the high thirties. In November the coast is a relief valve rather than a destination, and two nights in the middle of an itinerary is a sound decision.
The Zambezi and Caprivi
The rains arrive here first and hardest. Hot, humid, and greening fast. Birding improves quicker here than anywhere else in the country, and road access is still good — by January parts of it will not be.
Crowds, Costs and Comfort in November
November is low season almost everywhere. Rates drop noticeably from the August peak, availability opens right up, and the major sites are quiet. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is usually enough, against six months for July.
What you pay for that is heat. Interior temperatures in the mid to high thirties are hard work between eleven and four, and a vehicle with working air conditioning stops being a luxury — worth confirming with the rental desk rather than assuming.
October is drier and more certain. November is cheaper, quieter, and carries the chance of green landscapes and newborn animals. If you can only travel in one, and wildlife is the point, take October. If value and solitude matter more, take November.

Festivals and Events in November
There is no national public holiday in November, so domestic travel does not affect availability.
What November marks is the start of the summer season on the coast. Namibian families begin heading to Swakopmund and Walvis Bay toward the end of the month, ahead of the December holidays, so coastal accommodation starts to tighten from about the third week. The interior is unaffected.
Activities and Packing for November
- Sit at a waterhole through the heat. Counter-intuitive, and the best thing you can do in November.
- Use the floodlit camp waterholes after dark. Okaukuejo and Halali at night.
- Start everything at first light. Anything outdoors happens before nine.
- Build in coastal nights. Fifteen degrees cooler and it resets the trip.
- Watch the sky late in the month. The first storms are worth photographing even when no rain reaches the ground.

- Lightweight, loose, long-sleeved clothing — cooler than bare arms in this heat
- A light fleece for dawn and for the coast; nothing heavier
- A light rain jacket for the last two weeks of the month
- High-SPF sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, wraparound sunglasses, SPF lip balm
- Insect repellent — mosquitoes return with the rain
- Rehydration sachets; three litres of water a day inland is realistic
- Heavy moisturiser for very dry air before the rains break
November opens the seasonal transmission window, which runs November to June in Ohangwena, Omaheke, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa. The Kunene, Okavango and Zambezi rivers are year-round risk areas. Windhoek has no transmission and the Sossusvlei–Swakopmund–Damaraland circuit stays outside the risk regions. If your route runs north, take it to a travel clinic.

Yes, with a caveat no honest operator can remove: you are gambling on the rain. Arrive before it breaks and you get October’s wildlife at November’s prices. Arrive after and you get January’s scenery with better game viewing than January delivers.
What makes November genuinely attractive is the combination of low-season rates, near-empty parks and game that has not yet dispersed. What makes it hard is the heat.
