Where to stay in Damaraland
Twyfelfontein (/Ui-//aes) became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. UNESCO calls it one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa, a record of at least 2,000 years of hunter-gatherer ritual.
Communal conservancies such as Torra and Doro !Nawas are home to elephant and black rhino, and about 150 desert-adapted elephants live along the Hoarusib, Hoanib, Uniab, Huab and Ugab rivers.

Practical
Getting there
C-roads are gravel. Most D-roads and tracks in Kaokoland need a 4x4.
Opuwo has fuel. There is none further north or west, so fill up there.
Namibia holds about 35% of the world's black rhino. Save the Rhino calls the Kunene population the last truly wild population of any rhino species.
Greet the head of the homestead first and ask before you take photos.

Questions answered
What are the desert-adapted elephants?
They are an ecotype with learned behaviour, not a separate species. About 150 remain, along the Hoarusib, Hoanib, Uniab, Huab and Ugab rivers.
How old are the Twyfelfontein engravings?
UNESCO describes the site as a record of at least 2,000 years of hunter-gatherer ritual, and one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa. It became a World Heritage Site in 2007.
Do I need a 4x4?
C-roads are gravel. Most D-roads and tracks in Kaokoland need a 4x4. Opuwo has fuel, and there is none north or west of it.
What is Epupa Falls like?
Epupa Falls is on the Kunene River in the far north. The cascades run for about 1.5 km and the largest single drop is 37 m. Opuwo is the last fuel stop on the way.
How high is the Brandberg?
Its highest peak, Königstein, is 2,573 m. The White Lady rock painting is about a 40-minute walk into the Tsisab Ravine.
