Etendeka Mountain Camp
Etendeka Mountain Camp sits in the foothills of the Grootberg massif, among the old basalt lavas of northern Damaraland. You leave your car at Palmwag Lodge and a guide drives you the last 18 km by game-viewing vehicle, a trip of about an hour and a half that is the first look at the concession.
There are ten Meru tents, each with its own bathroom, cotton linen and the camp's open-air bucket shower. Meals are simple and fresh, cooked in solar ovens or over open fires and eaten together outside, and the camp runs largely on solar power. Etendeka is one of only two places to hold the top rank in the Namibian Eco-awards.
Days are spent on foot and in the vehicle with a guide: a long nature walk in the morning, a scenic drive in the afternoon to look for the animals that live in this harsh country, and after dinner your hosts Dennis and Bonnie bring out the telescope.

From the camp
Things to do
Scenic transfer to camp
You are met at Palmwag Lodge, where your car stays in secure parking, and driven 18 km to camp in a game-viewing vehicle. The guide talks about the geology, plants and animals on the way.
Guided morning nature walk
A walk of 4 to 6 km with plenty of stops to talk about what you see, and about the conservancies and what they mean to the local communities.
Afternoon scenic and game drive
A drive to other parts of the concession to look for the animals that have adapted to this dry country. Vehicles keep to the regular tracks.
Sundowner walk
A short walk up the hill behind camp after you arrive, for a view over the setting and the country around it.
Stargazing
Dennis and Bonnie point out the constellations, stars and planets with a star pointer and a telescope, under skies with very little light pollution.
All activities are with a guide, and walks follow set paths. Ask us about the transfer and activities when you book.

Information
When to go
June to October is the dry season and the best time for desert-adapted elephants and rhino around the waterholes. Most rain falls from January to April. Tap or hover over a month for more.
