Grootberg Lodge
Grootberg Lodge stands on the rim of the Etendeka Plateau, high above the Klip River Valley. The #Khoadi//Hoas community has set aside 12,000 hectares here for conservation and tourism, and the lodge was the first mid-market lodge in Namibia owned entirely by its conservancy.
The staff all come from the community, and the welcome is genuine. There are 16 rock-and-thatch chalets along the edge of the escarpment, a pool above the valley, a spa, and a restaurant with a fire for winter evenings and meals on the shaded veranda.
Grootberg is a good stop between Etosha and Swakopmund, and a base for the real wilderness of Damaraland: tracking desert-adapted elephant and black rhino, walks on the rim and sundowner drives on the plains.

Rock-and-thatch chalets with a double or twin beds, a shower and a private deck looking over the Klip River Valley.

Things to do
Desert elephant tracking
With a guide and tracker on the neighbouring farms in search of the desert-adapted elephants, with a picnic lunch under a shepherd tree. Sightings are not guaranteed.
Rhino tracking
Driving and walking among the cliffs and basalt ridges to look for black rhino, with a stop at the springs. Rough roads and rocky ground; sightings are not guaranteed.
Sundowner drive
A drive on the plains for zebra, springbok, kudu and oryx, with Brandberg on the horizon on clear days.
Moringa guided walk
A walk on the plateau looking at the plants, their medicinal uses and the 180-million-year-old rocks of the Etendeka. From 12 years.
Damara culture tour
A visit to Damara homesteads in the conservancy and to the conservancy office, to learn how people live and farm alongside wildlife here.

Information
When to go
June to October is the dry season and the best time for desert-adapted elephants and rhino around the waterholes. Most rain falls from January to April. Tap or hover over a month for more.

The #Khoadi//Hoas Conservancy owns Grootberg Lodge outright, and the staff all come from the community.
Can we see desert elephant and rhino?
The lodge runs elephant tracking and rhino tracking outings in the conservancy. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Is it a good stop between Etosha and the coast?
Yes. It sits on the C40 between Kamanjab and Palmwag, about halfway between Etosha and Swakopmund.
Is there a pool?
Yes, a pool on the edge of the plateau above the valley.
