How a Lodge & Camping Safari Works

A lodge and camping safari is a self-drive that mixes nights under canvas with nights in lodges. You camp where the setting is the point, beneath granite peaks or among Damaraland's boulders, and check into a lodge where a proper bed and a cooked dinner matter most. It is the closest you can get to the landscape, and it keeps the cost down.

Your vehicle: a 4x4 with rooftop tents and full camping kit, including a fridge-freezer, cooking gear, table and chairs, and bedding.
Your campsites: chosen for their setting and their facilities.
Your lodges: placed where a rest day, a game drive or a long drive makes them worth it.
Your support: a full briefing when you collect the vehicle at Hosea Kutako International Airport, 24-hour breakdown support and the Travel Key app with each day's route.

Where You Camp

These are some of the campsites our itineraries use.

Spitzkoppe Rest Camp: pitches beneath the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe.
Mowani campsites: near Twyfelfontein in Damaraland, set among the boulders.
Hoada Campsite: in Damaraland, run by its community owners together with Grootberg Lodge, with flushing toilets and an outdoor hot shower at each site.
Sesriem Campsite: at Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei.
Canyon Roadhouse Campsite: about 20 km from the Fish River Canyon.

For the most nights under canvas, start with the 14-Day Camping Namibia Safari through Etosha, Damaraland, the coast and Sossusvlei. With children, the 15-Day Family Namibia Adventure Safari sets a gentler pace. The 17-Day Classic Namibia Discovery Safari covers the classic circuit, the 16-Day Exclusive Northern Namibia Safari concentrates on the north, and the 17-Day Scenery & Serenity Namibia Safari on the south.

Three go beyond Namibia to Victoria Falls: the 14-Day Coast to Caprivi Namibia Safari, the 18-Day Houseboat & the Bushmen Namibia Safari and the 19-Day Deserts & Falls Namibia Safari. Do You Need Camping Experience?

No. The vehicle comes with everything you need, and we go through the vehicle and its equipment with you when you collect it. Camping nights are self-catered around the braai, and the towns along the route have supermarkets and fuel stations, so you stock up as you go.

Roads and the 4x4

A lodge and camping trip uses a 4x4 because it carries the tents and kit and handles long gravel days and remote campsites with ease. Keep to 80 km/h on gravel and do not drive between sunset and sunrise. More in do I need a 4x4 in Namibia? and what Namibian roads are actually like.

Best Time for a Camping Safari

May to October is the dry season, with wildlife gathered at Etosha's waterholes and the clearest night skies, though June and July bring cold mornings, so pack warm layers. What is a lodge & camping combination safari?

It is a self-drive journey that mixes nights in comfortable, characterful lodges with nights at well-appointed campsites. You get the best of both worlds — the closeness to nature and value of camping, paired with the comfort and hospitality of lodges in the places where it matters most. If you would rather stay in lodges throughout, our self-drive safaris follow the same routes without the canvas.

Do I need previous camping experience?

No experience is required. The campsites we use are well-equipped, with proper ablution facilities, shade and braai (barbecue) areas. We provide clear guidance, quality equipment options, and full support, so first-time campers feel completely at ease.

How comfortable is the camping side of the trip?

Very. Namibia’s campsites range from scenic community camps to private wilderness sites, most with hot showers, flushing toilets, electricity points and shaded pitches. Many are set in spectacular locations — beneath granite boulders, beside rivers, or under exceptionally dark, star-filled skies.

Do I need a 4x4 vehicle?

Yes, a 4x4 is recommended for these routes, especially where camping is involved. It offers the comfort, safety and capability needed for Namibia’s gravel roads and more remote areas, and fully-equipped camping 4x4s can be arranged as part of your package. Is a lodge & camping safari suitable for families?

Absolutely. The mix of lodges and camps keeps things varied and fun for all ages — children love the campfires and star-gazing, while lodge nights offer a comfortable reset. What about meals, fuel and supplies?

Lodge nights typically include meals, while camping nights are self-catered around the braai — part of the adventure. Towns along the route have supermarkets and fuel stations, though distances can be long, so we plan stops carefully and advise you to stock up and refuel regularly.

How far in advance should I book?

For travel between July and December (peak season), we recommend booking 6–12 months ahead. Popular lodges and the best campsites in areas like Etosha and Sossusvlei fill up early, so booking in good time secures the ideal route and stays. We travelled in 4x4 Land Cruisers with rooftop tents, alternating between wild camping and luxurious lodges. The terrain was dramatic and ever-changing – from vast desert plains to rocky outcrops and lush watering holes.
One of the highlights was a hot air balloon safari over the Namib Desert – a surreal and soul-stirring experience that left everyone speechless.

This trip wasn’t just about the sights – it was about the people. We cooked our own meals, shared stories around the campfire, and laughed over our driving antics. The bond between the team grew stronger each day, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

  A reliable and very helpful agency. For various reasons, adjustments were necessary, and they were always quick to find alternative solutions that, above all, met the needs expressed.
