This route is part of our Namibia safari packages, a 15-day self-drive journey designed for families, beginning in the capital, Windhoek, then travelling north to the leopard country of Okonjima and the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha, explored from both the Onguma reserve and the park's southern side. From there it crosses into rugged Damaraland — Palmwag, the Khowarib gorge, and the ancient rock art of Twyfelfontein — before reaching the granite domes of Spitzkoppe and the Atlantic coast at Swakopmund. The route then turns south to the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei at Sesriem, the Naukluft mountains, and the red sands of the Kalahari, returning to Windhoek. Crafted for independent travellers of all ages, it blends big-game wilderness, desert landscapes, dramatic mountains, and the wild Atlantic shore.

Day-By-Day Itinerary
Day 1 - 2
Situated in Central Namibia, the cosmopolitan city of Windhoek serves as the capital of the country. It is home to an international airport and a plethora of restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and accommodation options. The city is clean, safe and well-organised, with a colonial legacy that is reflected in its many German eateries and shops, and the widespread use of the German language.
Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look, including the Alte Feste an old fort, the 1896 Christuskirche Christ Church, and the more contemporary Supreme Court.

Day 2 - 3
Midway between the spectacular Etosha National Park and the capital city of Windhoek, lies the well-known Okonjima Nature Reserve. The 22 000 hectare nature reserve is home to AfriCAT, a carnivore sanctuary, which gives the captive cats a second chance to be released back into the wild and become completely independent hunters in a protected area right in the middle of commercial cattle farmland.
Visitors can enjoy a stay at a variety of excellent accommodation options including everything from luxury villas to secluded camping. Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy thrilling cat-tracking guided safaris, leopard-spotting, off-road night drives and learn about local San culture along the Bushmen trail.

Situated east of Etosha, bordering Fisher's Pan, Onguma Game Reserve is one of Namibia's best-kept secrets. The reserve offers visitors the opportunity to experience Africa in all her beauty and diversity. Onguma Game Reserve features over 35 480 hectares of protected land scattered with a variety of wildlife including plains game, black rhino, kudu, giraffe, zebra, lion, cheetah, leopard and more than 300 bird species.
The seasonal rains attract thousands of migrating birds to the Fisher’s Pan wetland area. The neighbouring Etosha National Park is home to a rich array of wildlife, including 4 of the Big 5.

Day 4 - 5
Located just south of the boundary of Etosha National Park in northwestern Namibia, Etosha South makes up the southern region of this wild paradise. The area is comprised of a collection of world class private game reserves. The national park can be accessed via the southern entrance at Andersson’s Gate. Visitors can catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife including: lion, giraffe, elephant, white and black rhino, and a multitude of plains game.
Popular activities include: enjoying an open 4x4 safari with an expert guide, half day or full day drives with the option of a picnic lunch with wine on the full day game drive.
Your base in the region is Etosha Safari Lodge.

Day 5 - 6
Palmwag is a nature reserve idyllically located along a palm-lined tributary of the Uniab River, halfway between Swakopmund and Etosha, providing an ideal base from which to see the sights of the Kunene region or embark on one of the many local hiking trails. Water is scarce in this area, so the river’s presence often lures elephants closer to the camps.
The reserve is notable for its unusual species of palm tree, the hyphaene petersiana, and for being home to the largest population of southwestern black rhinos in Africa. Animal lovers can also get a peek at leopard, lion, cheetah, mountain zebra, Angolan giraffe, springbok, kudu, and African bush elephant.

Day 6 - 8
Khowarib is a tiny village between Kaokoland and Damaraland in northwestern Namibia. Just minutes away lies the Hoanib River - one of the few free-flowing rivers in this part of the world - and the dramatic scenery of the Khowarib Gorge. You can go hiking along the river bed and through the gorge, or experience the region’s birds and animals on a guided drive or walk.
Though the climate is harsh, the wildlife is surprisingly rich and includes jackals, genets You may even be lucky enough to encounter a rhino or rare desert elephant. It is also possible to pay a visit to a local Himba village, where the people live an extremely traditional lifestyle that has changed little over the centuries.

Day 8 - 9
Set in the Kunene Region of northwestern Namibia, Twyfelfontein is a spectacularly scenic area, featuring one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. The name ‘Twyfelfontein’ translates to ‘Fountain of Doubt’, which refers to the perennial spring situated in the impressive Huab Valley flanked by the slopes of a sandstone table mountain.
It was this spring that attracted Stone Age hunters over six thousand years ago, and it was during this time that the extensive group of rock engravings and paintings were produced.

Day 9 - 10
Situated in Namibia’s desolate, awe-inspiring Namib Desert, between Usakos and Swakopmund and about two hours’ drive from Swakopmund, the Spitzkoppe are a group of bald granite peaks forming one of Namibia’s most recognizable and dramatic landmarks. These enormous towering domes are a mecca for hikers and mountaineers, from beginners interested in guided historic walks to professional climbers seeking an adrenaline boost.
Numerous ancient rock paintings can be visited as part of a guided walking tour. The extreme, barren landscapes and striking rock formations create an excellent setting for photography.
You'll be based at Spitzkoppe Rest Camp while you explore the area.

Day 10 - 12
Set between the rolling dunes of the Namib Desert and the icy Atlantic coastline, Swakopmund is a relaxed seaside town in western Namibia known for its German colonial architecture, cool coastal climate, and adventurous spirit. Palm-lined streets, historic buildings, and ocean fog create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the country. Travellers visit for desert activities such as quad biking, sandboarding, and scenic flights over vast dunes and shipwreck-strewn shores.
Cafés, bakeries, and small museums add to the town's laid-back charm, though the Atlantic waters are brisk rather than tropical. With its striking desert-meets-ocean setting and mix of adventure and history, Swakopmund is one of Namibia's most distinctive destinations.

Day 12 - 13
As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness are likely to end up staying at Sesriem, 65 kilometres away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes. Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot.
Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.)

Located in Central Namibia, the Naukluft Mountains cut a fine silhouette against the vast open skies of this incredibly beautiful country. Private farms occupy the northern reaches and to the south, the range falls within the spectacular Namib-Naukluft National Park. Rising steeply from the vast plains of Central Namibia, the rugged landscape holds a fascinating history, interesting geology and a boasts a variety of deep gorges, caves, small streams and beautiful waterfalls.
These mountains support an array of wildlife including over 50 mammal species such as leopard, mountain zebra; various antelope species and almost 200 species of bird.

Day 14 - 15
Spreading across Botswana, South Africa and Namibia, the Kalahari, meaning 'the great thirst', is an exceptionally beautiful living desert. The landscape is characterised by a large semi-arid sandy savannah, draped over a gently rolling inland sea of sand that covers most of Botswana and large parts of Namibia and South Africa.
It is inhabited by the indigenous San people, with the modern world having enveloped all the other areas they once roamed. The Namibian portion is made up of red sands covered in thin, wispy, mostly golden grass and dotted with acacia trees and wide-ranging wildlife, including gemsbok, impala, jackals and cheetah.
Overnight, you stay at Eningu Kalahari Lodge.

After a final morning in the red dunes of the Kalahari, your family safari comes to an end as you return to Windhoek and Hosea Kutako International Airport for your onward journey, taking with you unforgettable memories of leopard country at Okonjima, the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha, the rugged mountains and rock art of Damaraland, the windswept Atlantic coast at Swakopmund, and the towering dunes of Sossusvlei.
