The region

Where to stay at Sossusvlei

The Namib Sand Sea became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. It covers 3,077,700 ha, all inside the 49,768 km² Namib-Naukluft Park, and UNESCO calls it the only coastal desert with extensive fog-influenced dune fields.

The dunes at Sossusvlei rise up to 325 m from their base, and the dead camelthorns of Deadvlei are carbon-dated at 500 to 600 years. To the south, NamibRand became Africa's first International Dark-Sky Reserve in 2012.
