Balloon Safaris Over the Namib Desert

There is a particular argument for ballooning here that does not apply in most places. The Namib is one of the few landscapes where the view from a few hundred metres up is genuinely different in kind, not just in scale — dune crests resolve into a pattern you cannot read from the ground, and the fairy circles that nobody has fully explained appear as a regular grid across the plains.
Who actually flies, and from where
Two operators currently fly the Sossusvlei area. Namib Sky Balloon Safaris launches from a base roughly 20 to 22 kilometres south of Sesriem on the C27 and holds Non Scheduled Air Service Licence #29 and an Air Operating Certificate. Samawati Hot Air Ballooning operates from the Tsondab Valley near Solitaire, over the same broad area.
A third name still circulating is Francolino Fly-Ins at Twyfelfontein, which is listed as closed until further notice — worth knowing before you build an itinerary around it. A separate operator flies at the Brandberg and behind the coastal dune belt near Swakopmund, which is a different proposition from the Sossusvlei flights this post is about.
What the morning looks like
Flights launch at sunrise, which in practice means a pre-dawn pickup, watching the envelope inflate in the dark, and lifting off as the light hits the dune crests. The flight itself runs about an hour. After landing, the crew sets up breakfast where the balloon came down — a convention every operator in the region shares, and the reason a sparkling-wine toast appears in every account of it.
The N$10,720 figure comes from Namib Sky’s own published rate card and includes the flight certificate, breakfast, reserve fees and VAT. An older figure of N$4,500 circulates on a community-edited travel wiki; it is almost certainly out of date and should not be used for budgeting.
The restrictions worth checking before you book
Namib Sky requires children to be over 120 centimetres tall or over six years old, and states plainly that its insurance does not permit expectant mothers to fly. No operator publishes a passenger weight limit, which does not mean none applies — it means you should ask rather than assume.
Weather is the real variable. If the pilot judges conditions unsafe the flight is cancelled and the flight cost refunded, but the transfer fee stays payable. What no operator publishes, and what would genuinely be useful, is how often that happens — there is no abort-rate figure in the public domain from any operator or third party. Plan as though it might not fly.
One thing is worth stating plainly because nobody else does. Operators say their rates include park and concession fees, and one cites Civil Aviation Authority approval — but CAA approval is aviation licensing, not park permission. MEFT’s own page for Namib-Naukluft Park lists permitted activities and hot-air ballooning is not among them, and no official statement authorising it could be found. The flights clearly operate with some arrangement in place; the public record simply does not set out what it is.
Two practical points. First, give yourself more than one morning at Sossusvlei — with a single night, a weather cancellation ends the idea entirely, which is one reason how many days you need in Namibia is worth reading before fixing an itinerary. Second, the same clear, dry air that makes ballooning possible makes this some of the best stargazing country on earth, so the night before the flight is not dead time.
