Flying to Namibia: routes, airlines and arrival

Windhoek has twelve direct routes and only four are long-haul: Frankfurt with Condor and Discover, Munich with Discover, Zurich with Edelweiss, and Addis Ababa with Ethiopian. There is no direct flight from the UK. Everyone else connects.

The flight is usually the largest single line in a Namibian budget and the one with the fewest options, because Hosea Kutako is a small airport at the end of a long thin route map. Knowing which four routes exist changes how you book, and one of them carries a paperwork trap that catches people every year.

The long-haul routes, all four

Twelve direct routes serve Windhoek and eight of them are regional African hops. The four that matter to a European traveller are these.

Note what is missing. No London, no Amsterdam, no Paris, no Doha or Dubai direct. British, Dutch, French and Belgian travellers all connect, most often through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Addis or Johannesburg.

The Addis trap

Ethiopian via Addis Ababa is often the cheapest routing from Europe, and it comes with a condition most booking sites do not mention. A yellow fever certificate is required for anyone who has transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in a country with yellow fever transmission risk. A long Addis layover can therefore trigger a certificate requirement that a Frankfurt routing would not. Check your connection time before you book the cheap fare, not after.

A twelve-hour layover is the threshold. If your Addis connection is thirteen hours and you have no yellow fever certificate, you have a problem at check-in rather than on arrival.

The full position on entry paperwork is in what vaccinations Namibia actually requires, and the visa side, which changed in 2025, in which countries now need a visa.

Arriving at Hosea Kutako

  • The airport is about 45 minutes east of Windhoek. Nothing about the drive is difficult, but most European flights land in the early morning after an overnight.
  • The visa desk sits before immigration. Have the fee in cash if your nationality now needs one.
  • Vehicles are normally collected at the airport on arrival. Take the full briefing rather than rushing it, and check the spares, the jack and the tyre pressures before you drive away.
  • Do not plan to drive to Sossusvlei on arrival day. It is five hours and you have not slept.
  • Spend the first night in Windhoek or on a farm outside it. Every experienced itinerary does this and every rushed one regrets not doing it.

Flying inside Namibia

The country is large enough that internal flights make sense for some itineraries and nonsense for others. Scheduled regional services connect Windhoek with Walvis Bay and a handful of towns, while the fly-in safari market runs charter aircraft into gravel strips at the camps themselves. Charter is expensive and it removes the part of Namibia most people came for, which is the road. It earns its cost when your days are short or the Kaokoveld is on the list.

If the driving is the appeal rather than the obstacle, our 17-day scenery and serenity safari is built around arrival day being a short one.

What that means for you

Book the long-haul leg before the itinerary. With four routes and limited frequency, the flight decides your dates far more than the lodges do, particularly between July and October.
