Is Epupa Falls Worth the Detour, and How Many Nights?

Epupa Falls is worth it if you want remote river scenery and can give it two nights. It lies about 199 km of gravel north of Opuwo, so a same-day return makes a very long day. It is not a wildlife stop and is much smaller than Victoria Falls; travellers who loved it usually stayed overnight on the Kunene River.

Epupa Falls divides the TripAdvisor Namibia forum. One reply says it is “good for about an hour for most folks”; another advises staying “up on the Kunene River for a couple of days”. Both are right for different travellers. This guide sets out the distance, the road and what is there, so you can decide which one you are.

What you are driving to

Epupa Falls is a series of cascades on the Kunene River. Wikipedia describes the falls as spread over a length of about 1.5 km, with a greatest single drop of 37 metres (Wikipedia). Other sources give different heights, so treat any figure as approximate. A forum reply put the scale plainly: “Epupa is nothing like Victoria Falls” (TripAdvisor).

Distances from Epupa Falls Lodge. The road is the C43, which Wikipedia says starts at Epupa and runs via Okangwati (Okongwati on the lodge’s page) to Opuwo, with a gravel surface for most of its length.

Day trip or overnight

Forum times for the drive from Opuwo vary: “about 2.5 hours” on “a very smooth” gravel road in one 2013 thread, “can take 3 hours each way” in the same thread, and “an easy 3 hr drive” in another. The lodge says “around four hours under normal conditions”. A round trip in one day is therefore five to eight hours of driving, which is why a reply in an older thread warned that a day trip “would make for a very long day” (TripAdvisor).

The case for staying is the evening. One traveller said it was worth staying “just to see the sunset from the hill above the falls” (TripAdvisor). Desert Tracks usually plans two nights at Epupa, which gives a full day there between the two drives.

The case against comes from travellers who wanted wildlife. “Not much ‘up there’ by way of wildlife”, and the scenery is “on the stark side of dramatic”, in one Kunene thread; another poster in the same thread would “skip Epupa and the north all together”.

Do you need a 4×4?

For the main road, sources disagree. Wikipedia says “a four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended to reach them from Opuwo”. Forum replies call the road “gravel but perfectly fine” and say “You certainly don’t need 4×4 experience” (TripAdvisor), while warning that “large areas of the North West” are 4×4 only. The tracks beyond Epupa, such as the route along the river or west via Orupembe to Purros, are 4×4 trails; one poster put Orupembe to Opuwo at 6 to 8 hours and called a single vehicle a “big risk” (TripAdvisor). Our guide do you need a 4×4 in Namibia? covers the wider question.

Fuel, supplies and the crocodiles

Opuwo is the place to stock up. Travel News Namibia describes it as having “well-stocked grocery shops”, banks, fuel and a hospital, and a tarred road to Kamanjab (Travel News Namibia). Fill up there; we could not confirm fuel at Epupa or Okongwati. If you come from the west, a forum poster called Sesfontein “the last fuel station until Opuwo”.

Do not swim in the river. The lodge says “Crocodiles inhabit parts of the river”, and the Allgemeine Zeitung puts it more firmly: “no bathing in the river on any account” (Allgemeine Zeitung).

Himba villages come up in almost every Epupa thread. If you want to visit one, go only with a local guide.

Fitting it in with Damaraland and Etosha

Opuwo is reached on tar from Kamanjab, and Epupa is the detour north from there. A forum reply put Opuwo about 195 km from Etosha’s Galton Gate on gravel, and warned that staying on tar via Andersson Gate adds a long way (TripAdvisor). The lodge names May to July as an excellent time to visit. For the lodges in the region see Damaraland and the Kaokoveld, and for the stretch on the way north, is Damaraland worth it? Our guide to self-driving in Etosha covers the park gates.
