October is Namibia’s hottest month and its most concentrated for game. Windhoek averages 33°C by day and 16°C at night with about 11mm of rain. The coast stays near 16°C. Six months without rain leaves the waterholes as the only water in the country., the dry winter. Rainfall is near zero, wildlife concentrates at Etosha’s waterholes, and roads are at their best. July and August are the peak — and the coldest, near 6 °C at dawn.
October is the month we are most often honest about and least often thanked for it. The wildlife is genuinely at its peak — after six rainless months every animal in Etosha is tied to a handful of waterholes, and the sightings are the kind people describe for years. It is also 33 degrees, windy, and hard work if you are not built for heat. Both of those things are true at once, and which one matters more is a question only you can answer.

On the same October afternoon it is 33°C in Windhoek and 16°C in Swakopmund, three hundred kilometres apart. Nowhere else on a Namibian itinerary is the gap this wide. Plan the coast as the cool-down leg, not as a beach stop.
Why the game viewing is at its absolute peak
- Six months without rain. Every seasonal pan dried out long ago. What is left is a small number of permanent and pumped waterholes.
- Everything has to drink. In heat like this, daily. Elephant, and the herds that will not approach while elephant are there, cycle through all afternoon.
- The bush is transparent. No grass, no leaves, nothing to hide behind.
- The floodlit waterholes run late. At Okaukuejo and Halali the action often peaks well after dark, when it is finally cool enough to move.
Working with the heat instead of against it
The practical answer is to stop pretending you will be out all day. Drive early, be back before eleven, do nothing at all through the middle of the day, and go out again from four until the gate closes. That is how people live here in October and it is not a compromise — it maps exactly onto when the animals move. Fighting it produces heat exhaustion and worse photographs.
Water matters more than most visitors plan for. Carry considerably more than you think in the vehicle, keep it out of the sun, and treat a functioning fridge or coolbox as a safety item rather than a luxury. Check tyre pressures in the cool of the morning; hot gravel and underinflated tyres are the commonest cause of a ruined day.
Cost, crowds and the fee change
October sits a step below the July–August peak on most rate cards, which makes it quietly good value for the best game viewing of the year. Kwessi Dunes publishes N$14,645 in October against N$20,495 at peak, and Hoanib Valley Camp N$20,395 against N$25,995. Set against that, Namibia’s park entry fee is N$280 per foreign adult per day plus N$50 for the vehicle from 1 April 2026, and October trips tend to be park-heavy.
If anyone in the party struggles in heat — small children, older travellers, anyone with a low tolerance for it — say so before booking rather than after. October is the one month where the honest answer is sometimes that a different month, or a coast-weighted route, will give you a better trip than the famous waterholes will.
