Namibia in September – Dry, Warming Up, and Still Superb for Game
September is dry, warming and excellent for game. Windhoek averages 30°C by day and 14°C at night with about 5mm of rain; the north runs 31°C. The waterholes are still the only water, so the game viewing matches August without the cold mornings., the dry winter. Rainfall is near zero, wildlife concentrates at Etosha’s waterholes, and roads are at their best. July and August are the peak — and the coldest, near 6 °C at dawn.
If you asked us to pick one month and defend it, this would be the one. September keeps everything that makes August the classic safari month — no water anywhere except the waterholes, bare ground, animals with nowhere else to go — and quietly removes the part nobody enjoys, which is standing in the dark at 5am in a coat that is not warm enough. The trade is heat later in the month, and by the end of it you can feel October coming.

It warms steeply from start to finish. The first week still behaves like winter, with cold mornings and pleasant afternoons; the last week is genuinely hot inland and starting to look like October. If you are heat-sensitive, book the front half.
Why the game viewing holds up
Nothing has changed since August in the way that matters. The last rain fell around March or April, the ephemeral pans are long gone, and the permanent waterholes remain the only water in the landscape. The grass is still eaten down, so sightlines stay open. The 5mm on the Windhoek line is a statistical scattering rather than rain you would notice, and it puts nothing back into the veld.
Light, and the early start
Sunrise is getting earlier through September, which shifts when you need to be moving. At Sossusvlei this is the difference between a good picture and a queue: the inner Sesriem gate opens an hour before sunrise for guests staying inside it, while the outer gate only opens at sunrise. Where you sleep the night before decides which of those you get.
Cost and crowds
September is high season but not usually peak. On the published 2026 rate cards the peak band is July and August, with September dropping back a step — Hoanib Valley Camp is N$22,545 in September against N$25,995 in peak, and Kwessi Dunes N$18,445 against N$20,495. It is a modest saving on a large number, but it comes with better weather, which is an unusual combination.
One planning note that catches people: Namibia’s park entry fee is N$280 per foreign adult per day plus N$50 for the vehicle from 1 April 2026. On a two-week self-drive with several park days that is a real line, and it is not included in NWR accommodation rates or in any self-drive quote unless someone has explicitly put it there.
