Namibia in August – Cold Nights, Dry Days and Peak Game Viewing
August is Namibia’s driest and coldest month, and its best for game viewing. Windhoek averages 26°C by day and 10°C at night with no rain; the coast sits near 16°C. Animals concentrate at waterholes because there is nowhere else to drink., the dry winter. Rainfall is near zero, wildlife concentrates at Etosha’s waterholes, and roads are at their best. July and August are the peak — and the coldest, near 6 °C at dawn.
August is the month everybody wants, and for once the consensus is right — but not for the reason most people give. It is not that the weather is pleasant. It is that four months without rain have removed every puddle in the country, so the game has no choice but to walk to the waterholes you are parked at. That is the whole trick, and it is why August costs what it costs.

Ten degrees at night sounds mild written down. On an open vehicle at half past five in the morning, moving, in a desert, it is not. Every August a proportion of visitors arrive with nothing warmer than a fleece and spend the best hour of every day being miserable in it.
Why the game viewing peaks now
- No surface water. Nothing has fallen since about April. Every ephemeral pan is gone, and the permanent waterholes are the only option.
- The grass is finished. Eaten and dried down, so sightlines open up across country that was impenetrable in March.
- The animals come to you. In Etosha this reverses the usual safari: you park at a waterhole and wait rather than driving around looking.
- Predators follow. Where the herds have to concentrate, so does everything that eats them.
What August costs
Peak season everywhere, and the gap is large. Shipwreck Lodge on the Skeleton Coast publishes N$30,195 per person per night in July and August against N$17,995 in green season. Hoanib Valley Camp is N$25,995 against N$15,995, and Kwessi Dunes N$20,495 against N$10,845. At the other end, an Okaukuejo waterhole chalet inside Etosha is N$3,480 per person in peak against N$2,380 in low season — still the best-value bed in Namibian wildlife watching.
The coast is doing something else entirely
Swakopmund in August is 16°C by day, 9°C at night, and frequently grey until mid-morning. That is not bad luck, it is the Benguela current and it happens most days. Plan the coast for the seals, the desert-edge drives and the food rather than for beach weather, and do the Namib and Etosha for sunshine.
Winter also means late sunrises, which makes the Sossusvlei gate arrangement matter more than usual: the inner Sesriem gate opens an hour before sunrise for guests staying inside it, while everyone else waits for the outer gate.
August is the month where availability, not price, is the constraint. If you want to sleep inside Etosha or inside the Sesriem gate, book as far ahead as you possibly can — those two are gone long before the private camps are.
