Sandwich Harbour sits a little under 60 km south of Walvis Bay inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park, where the dunes run straight into the Atlantic and the only way in is by 4×4 along a beach the tide controls. Every trip is shaped by that tide, so it helps to know what each option actually covers before you book.

The tour options compared

Why most travellers prefer the full day

The six-hour trip covers the same ground as the half-day at an easier pace. Lunch is served at a folding table with chairs and a tablecloth, on a dune overlooking the ocean or on the beach, with salad, bread, fruit, oysters and sparkling wine. That leaves more time for photographs and short walks, and more room to work around the tide. When travellers on the TripAdvisor Namibia forum ask which to book, most who have done it recommend the full day. It costs N$730 more per adult, and at least three people must book for it to run.

What happens on the half-day trip

From there the vehicles cross the Kuiseb River delta, where the operator says it holds the only activity concession, then run south along the beach. The drive home goes over the high dunes, which is the roller-coaster part people remember. Oysters, sparkling wine and snacks are served on a dune top or on the beach.

The tide decides your route

Operators only drive the beach all the way into the lagoon when the tide and the weather allow it. On other days you look down on the lagoon from a lookout point and walk from there. That is not a lesser version of the trip; it is how this coast works, and no operator can promise the beach run on a given date.

If low tide falls early in the morning or late in the evening on your dates, book anyway and ask the operator how they will plan around it. Travellers on the forum describe guides timing the beach run to a 6am low tide, and others who only drove a short stretch of beach said the dune route more than made up for it.

Fog

Coastal fog can come in on any day, and travellers report it is more common in winter. If you have two days on the coast, keep one free so you can move the trip if the morning is grey.

Combine it with the sea: cruise or kayak

With only one day on the coast, you can do the water and the dunes back to back.

• Seal kayaking + 4×4. The morning is a guided paddle among Cape fur seals at Pelican Point, with no experience needed, followed by a 4×4 drive across the salt pans and the Kuiseb Delta into the dunes, with a picnic on the way. One booking site lists it at USD 260 per person, minimum two: Seal Kayaking and Sandwich Harbour.

Both combinations are still bound by the tide, and a morning on the water leaves less time in the dunes: one traveller on a kayak combination reported not reaching Sandwich Harbour itself. Ask the operator whether the lagoon is included on your date before you book.

Sandwich Harbour or the Skeleton Coast?

If you only have time for one day trip from Swakopmund or Walvis Bay, we recommend Sandwich Harbour. It is where the dunes meet the ocean. A Skeleton Coast day trip from Swakopmund usually heads north to the Cape Cross seal colony and has far less dune scenery.

And if you are also going to Sossusvlei?

Do both. They are two completely different trips: Sossusvlei is an inland dune sea and clay pans, reached on foot and by shuttle (see the Sossusvlei 4×4 shuttle and the walk to Deadvlei), while Sandwich Harbour is dunes running into the Atlantic, a beach drive and a coastal wetland.
