Sesriem Gate Times, Month by Month
The Sesriem gate opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, so the time shifts through the year, from about 07:38 in June and July to about 06:00 in November and December. The inner gate to Sossusvlei opens roughly an hour earlier. NWR publishes no clock times, so plan from the month-by-month table below and treat the edges as approximate., the dry winter. Rainfall is near zero, wildlife concentrates at Etosha’s waterholes, and roads are at their best. July and August are the peak — and the coldest, near 6 °C at dawn.
Almost every guide to Sossusvlei tells you the Sesriem gate opens at sunrise and stops there. The trouble is that sunrise at Sesriem moves by more than an hour and a half across the year, so sunrise is not a time you can plan a 4am alarm around. Here are the actual clock times, month by month, and an honest note on where they come from.
Why sunrise is not a plan
The standard line, including on SafariBookings’ Sossusvlei guide, is that the gate opens at sunrise. That is correct and nearly useless, because sunrise at Sesriem ranges from around 07:38 in midwinter to around 06:00 in November and December, a swing of about 97 minutes. Namibia Wildlife Resorts’ own Sesriem campsite page gives no clock times at all, so travellers are left converting sunrise in their heads at 4am.
The gate times, month by month
The times below are calculated for Sesriem’s coordinates on the 15th of each month, in Namibian time. The inner gate figure applies the widely repeated one-hour-earlier rule; note that this rule is published by a third-party site rather than by NWR, so treat it as a close guide, not a guarantee. Sunset is the outer-gate closing time.
The inner gate, and what it buys you
Staying at the Sesriem campsite inside the first gate is the only way to be at the dunes for sunrise, because the inner gate opens about an hour before the outer one. Day visitors entering at the outer gate at sunrise are always an hour behind. Even from the inner gate you are not there instantly: there is the drive to the 2×4 car park and then the final five kilometres to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei to cover on foot or by shuttle, so leave the moment the gate lifts.
Plan the rest of the day around the light
Because the good light is at the very start of the day, Sossusvlei shapes the days on either side of it, which is worth checking against whether your Namibia itinerary is too ambitious.
