FAQ'S
What is a self-drive safari?
A self-drive safari gives you the freedom to explore Africa’s wild spaces at your own pace. You travel in your own rental vehicle, stop for photos whenever you like, and enjoy the adventure of the open road with nature as your guide.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle?
For most routes, a 4x4 is recommended to handle gravel roads and sandy tracks comfortably. It also gives you access to more remote parks and viewpoints.
How long should I plan for my safari?
We suggest planning between 10 – 16 days to enjoy the journey without feeling rushed. This allows time for game drives, scenic stops, and relaxing at your lodges or camps.
Is it safe to drive on safari?
Yes, absolutely — as long as you follow simple guidelines. Keep to marked roads, respect speed limits, and avoid driving after dark. Wildlife and road safety are top priorities, and most routes are well-maintained and clearly signposted.
What documents or permits do I need?
You’ll need a valid passport, driver’s licence (an international one if you’re visiting from abroad), visa if required, vehicle and travel insurance, and for families, children’s unabridged birth certificates. We’ll help make sure everything is in order before your journey.
What should I pack or have in the car?
A few essentials include water, a first-aid kit, a spare tyre, sun protection, and a good map or GPS. Most rental vehicles come fully equipped for safari travel. We will also suggest some other useful tips before arrival.
What are the main driving rules in national parks?
Stay on designated roads, keep a safe distance from wildlife, and never exit your vehicle unless in an approved area. Respect park gate times and always follow ranger instructions.
Will I have mobile or GPS signal everywhere?
Coverage can be limited in remote areas, but offline maps and preloaded routes work perfectly. We provide reliable navigation tools for peace of mind.
How much does a self-drive safari cost?
Costs depend on your route and accommodation style. Self-drive safaris are flexible — you control your budget and pace. We’ll help design an itinerary that suits your travel style.
Can I cross borders during my trip?
Yes, many travellers drive across borders into neighbouring countries. Just let us know in advance so we can arrange the necessary vehicle and insurance documents.
What happens if I get a flat tyre or a mechanical issue?
Our support team and partner networks are always on call. Most rental vehicles have spares and basic tools, and roadside assistance is just a phone call away.
Can I drive at night?
It’s best to plan drives during daylight to enjoy the scenery and ensure visibility. Park gates usually close at sunset — perfect timing to relax and watch the stars.
Is THIS safari suitable for families or first-timers?
Definitely. With clear roads, well-marked routes, and welcoming lodges, self-drives are a wonderful family adventure. We’ll tailor the itinerary to suit your comfort level.
Do I need special insurance?
Comprehensive insurance is always included with our rentals. We’ll make sure you understand exactly what’s covered before you start your journey.

What Our
Travellers Say
Posted on Chris Pilditch Desert Tracks were suggested to us for our first trip to Namibia, and we were delighted not only by the way our booking was handled, but also by the actual trip they put together by us. Viola and Jaun were always quick to respond, helpful, polite and professional, and they listened to our initial ideas and expectations and came up with a fit-for-purpose holiday. Everything went well during the trip itself - the car, lodges and other bookings were just what we would have wished for. DT also provided lots of background info and suggested excursions, etc. and the Travel Key app gave us relevant day to day information, including a Google Map link to the day's road journey. All in all, a great holiday, professionally organised. No hesitation in recommending DT when booking your trip! Posted on Simon H I cant speak highly enough of Desert Tracks as our partner for our holiday in Namibia. Viola was fantastic throughout. From the start as we developed our ideas about a possible holiday to Africa, through to firming up a brilliantly balanced itinerary, and then whilst we were in country checking in, offering advice and sharing the excitement of our amazing holiday. Namibia is a fantastic place to holiday; beautiful, friendly, varied and safe. We loved it. And this was made possible by Viola and Desert Tracks. I am not normally someone who rights reviews fro products or services, but in this instance I couldn't not - sharing with others is the right thing to do because it will hopefully allow more people to benefit from Desert Track's expertise and for more people to experience Namibia. If i could award 6, or 7, or 8 stars I would!!! Thanks Viola. You made 2 people smile a lot.Posted on Dasha Cherenkova Excellence! Thank you for my trip . Wildlife-rich Etosha National Park. The serene Epako Reserve, where we ended our journey in style. 🚙 The Experience We travelled in 4x4 Land Cruisers with rooftop tents, alternating between wild camping and luxurious lodges. For various reasons, adjustments were necessary, and they were always quick to find alternative solutions that, above all, met the needs expressed. It would be wonderful to travel to Namibia every year.
