Is the Caprivi (Zambezi Region) Worth the Drive?

Worth it if you have several extra nights and want rivers, buffalo, hippo and birdlife rather than more desert. The drive is long: forum travellers put Etosha to Divundu on the Okavango at more than 600 km, about eight hours. Most who add the region finish one-way at Katima Mulilo, Kasane or Victoria Falls rather than drive back. With only a few spare days, forum regulars suggest leaving it out. Desert Tracks usually plans three nights there, combined with Chobe and Victoria Falls.

The Caprivi, now officially the Zambezi Region, is the long finger of Namibia that reaches east between Angola, Zambia and Botswana. It looks nothing like the rest of the country: rivers, floodplains, buffalo and hippo instead of dunes and gravel plains. On the TripAdvisor Namibia forum, travellers keep asking whether it is worth the drive. This guide sets out the three national parks, the distances and the seasons, so you can decide.

Three parks, three kinds of trip

Figures below are from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) park pages.

ParkSizeAccessKnown for
Bwabwata6,100 km²; gazetted in 2007Core areas on the Okavango in the west and the Kwando in the eastLarge concentrations of elephant and buffalo
Mudumu1,010 km²; proclaimed in 1990No formal gate or fence; at least two 4x4s recommended in the rainy seasonDeep sand reported by forum travellers
Nkasa Rupara (formerly Mamili)320 km²; proclaimed 1 March 1990A 4×4 with recovery equipment is requiredAbout 1,000 buffalo and 430 bird species recorded

Sources: MEFT pages for Bwabwata, Mudumu and Nkasa Rupara. NACSO adds that in years of flooding up to 80 percent of Nkasa Rupara cannot be reached by vehicle (NACSO).

On the forum, a traveller weighing Mudumu against Horseshoe Bend was told that the Buffalo area of Bwabwata deserves a full day and Mudumu at least half a day, that both have deep sand, and that Horseshoe Bend is hit and miss (TripAdvisor). Further west, the Mahango and Buffalo areas near the Okavango were recommended for elephant and hippo, with roan, sable and red lechwe among the antelope (TripAdvisor).

How many nights, and the drive

Distance is the real cost. One forum reply puts Onguma, on the eastern edge of Etosha, to Divundu at more than 600 km and about eight hours (TripAdvisor). Another describes the B8 east as fast, straight and boring tar. A traveller fitting the region into a 17-day trip was told that seeing all of the parks properly would take three weeks, and in the end left it out (TripAdvisor). The panhandle thread puts it simply: do not race up there just to tick it off.

So the honest answer is that the Zambezi Region suits trips with several extra nights to spare. With fewer, the forum view is to leave it for another visit. On our own itineraries we usually plan three nights in the region. Our Zambezi and Kavango accommodation page lists lodges along the rivers.

Dry season or birding season

In a thread on when to visit, replies pointed to June to October for wildlife and easier access, November to February for birds, and warned that October and November are extremely hot. Flooding affects access too, as the NACSO figure for Nkasa Rupara shows.

The region is a malaria area. The US CDC lists malaria in Zambezi and both Kavango regions, among others, and none in the city of Windhoek (CDC). Ask a travel clinic before you go, and see our guide to staying healthy on a Namibia safari.

Finishing one-way at Kasane or Victoria Falls

Because the drive back west is so long, forum replies suggest ending the trip at Katima Mulilo, Kasane or Victoria Falls instead. Desert Tracks arranges self-drives that finish one-way at Kasane or Victoria Falls. Taking a Namibian hire car across a border needs the right paperwork, which our guide to taking a Namibian hire car to Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe explains. For the Chobe side, see the best time to visit Chobe National Park, and for combining the desert with the delta country, see combining a desert safari with the delta regions.

How does the game compare with Botswana? Our view is that you do not have to choose: the Zambezi Region and Chobe combine well on one trip, with Victoria Falls at the end. On the forum, opinions differ. One forum poster said Moremi, Chobe, Savuti and Khwai are far better for game, while others called the Zambezi Region a great contrast with the rest of Namibia (TripAdvisor).

Frequently asked questions

Is the Caprivi Strip worth visiting?

It is worth it if you have several extra nights and want rivers, buffalo, hippo and birds rather than more desert. Forum travellers call it a great contrast with the rest of Namibia, but advise not to race up there just to tick it off.

How many days do I need for the Zambezi Region?

A forum reply said seeing all of its parks properly takes about three weeks. Buffalo needs a full day and Mudumu at least half a day, plus long driving days to get there. Desert Tracks usually plans three nights in the region.

How far is the Caprivi from Etosha?

One forum reply puts Onguma, on Etosha’s eastern edge, to Divundu at more than 600 km and about eight hours of driving.

Do I need a 4×4 in the Zambezi Region?

For the parks, yes. MEFT requires a 4×4 with recovery equipment in Nkasa Rupara and recommends at least two 4x4s in Mudumu in the rainy season. Forum travellers report deep sand in Buffalo and Mudumu.

When is the best time to visit the Caprivi?

Forum replies point to June to October for wildlife and access, and November to February for birds. October and November are extremely hot, and in flood years up to 80 percent of Nkasa Rupara is inaccessible by vehicle, according to NACSO.

Is the Caprivi better than Botswana for game viewing?

Our view is that you do not need to choose: the Zambezi Region combines well with Chobe and Victoria Falls on one trip. On the forum, one poster said Moremi, Chobe, Savuti and Khwai are far better for game; others value the Zambezi Region as a great contrast with the rest of Namibia.

Can I finish a self-drive at Kasane or Victoria Falls?

Yes. Desert Tracks arranges self-drives that finish one-way at Kasane or Victoria Falls, which avoids the long drive back. Taking a hire car across the border needs your rental company’s cross-border documents.

Is there malaria in the Caprivi?

Yes. The US CDC lists malaria in Zambezi and both Kavango regions, and none in the city of Windhoek. Ask a travel clinic about prevention before you go.

How many elephants are there in Namibia?

A 2023 Namibian Sun report on the KAZA elephant survey counted 21,090 elephants in Namibia, about nine percent of the KAZA total. Bwabwata is noted by MEFT for large concentrations of elephant and buffalo.
